S'mores Without a Campfire
You do not need a fire to get a gooey marshmallow between graham crackers and melted chocolate. The oven, the microwave and a skillet of dip all do the job, and each one takes only a few minutes.
The Story
S'mores are the classic campfire treat: toasted marshmallow and melted chocolate pressed between two graham crackers. The fire is only there to do two jobs, toasting the marshmallow and softening the chocolate, and a kitchen can do both.
This page gives you three indoor versions. The oven makes a whole tray at once. The microwave makes one in under a minute. The dip is baked in a skillet and scooped up with graham crackers, which is handy when a crowd is hungry. You will not get the smoky flavor of a real fire, but the gooey, melty middle is just the same.
Ingredients
- 8 graham crackers, broken in half to make 16 squares
- 4 chocolate bars (about 1.5 ounces or 43 g each), broken into pieces
- 8 large marshmallows
- 1 cup (175 g) semisweet chocolate chips, for the dip
- 2 cups (100 g) mini marshmallows, for the dip
- 1 tablespoon (14 g) butter, to grease the skillet
- Extra graham crackers, for scooping the dip
Steps
- For oven s'mores, heat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment. Set 8 graham cracker squares on the sheet and top each with a piece of chocolate and a large marshmallow.
- Bake for 3 to 5 minutes, until the marshmallows are puffed and lightly golden. Watch closely, because they brown fast. Top each with a second graham cracker square and press down gently.
- For a microwave s'more, set one graham cracker square on a plate and top it with a piece of chocolate and one large marshmallow. Microwave for 10 to 15 seconds, until the marshmallow puffs up. Add a second square on top and press down.
- For s'mores dip, heat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and grease a small oven-safe skillet with the butter. Spread the chocolate chips in an even layer over the bottom.
- Scatter the mini marshmallows over the chocolate, covering it completely. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, until the marshmallows are puffed and golden on top.
- Let the dip cool for a few minutes, since the chocolate underneath stays very hot. Scoop it up with graham crackers and eat it while it is warm.
FAQs
Can you make s'mores in the oven?
Yes. Put the graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows on a lined baking sheet and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. Keep an eye on them, since marshmallows go from golden to burnt quickly.
How do you make s'mores in the microwave?
Stack a graham cracker, chocolate and a marshmallow on a plate and microwave for 10 to 15 seconds. The marshmallow swells a lot, so use a plate with room to spare and stop as soon as it puffs up.
How do you make s'mores dip?
Spread chocolate chips in a small oven-safe skillet, cover them with mini marshmallows and bake until the marshmallows are golden. Scoop it up with graham crackers while it is warm.
Why do my microwave marshmallows get tough?
Marshmallows left in the microwave too long deflate as they cool and turn chewy and hard. Heat them for just a few seconds, until they puff, and eat the s'more right away.
