The Door That Wouldn't Come Down

Down, up, down, up: why a door will not close, and the two little eyes that explain it.

Listen to this story

Read aloud by Smorty.

Here is a story about me, which is my favorite kind. One evening the door started to come down, stopped halfway, and went back up. Down, up. Down, up. "Smorty," said the Spring, "are you being silly?" "I am NOT being silly," I said. "I'm being a door!"

The firefly floated down to the bottom of the track and held up her lantern. There was a little eye on each side, low to the ground, and one of them was knocked crooked. Those eyes send a tiny invisible beam across the doorway so the door knows nothing is in the way. If the beam is blocked or the eyes do not line up, the door stops, to be safe. And that is a good thing!

Told by Smorty

The Fix

A grown-up wiped both eyes with a soft cloth and nudged the crooked one until a little light came on, and the door closed all the way. If a door keeps going back up, look at those low eyes first.

The Moral

Springs, cables and anything under tension are for a trained tech. Never a kid's job, and never a do-it-yourself job.
